Accelerated Literacy

_MG_8613.jpg

English teachers at MBHS are committed to professional training and development that leads to the development of effective literary skills for students at all levels.

One methodology used at MBHS is Accelerated Literacy which aims to help students read and write complex texts. To deliver this, teachers must have attended 4 days of intensive training and then be supported by observation and discussion with an AL consultant for a minimum of 2 years to refine their understanding and practice. Teachers are also encouraged to undertake AL Accreditation through Charles Darwin University. In 2009 there are 58 schools across SA implementing AL.

The focus of Accelerated Literacy is on ensuring that every student experiences success, using highly literate, age-appropriate texts which provide a resource for learning about specific writing techniques and language use. Through oral language, reading, spelling and writing activities in a regular sequence, students build a common understanding of each text, the intentions of the authors and how writers’ choices affect the reader with the goal of composing their own original texts using this knowledge.

If you have any questions about Accelerated Literacy please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the English Coordinator.

English and EALD

Middle School

At Murray Bridge High School students will study either English or English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD). From 2013, this will be guided by the Australian Curriculum which is divided into the strands of Language, Literature and Literacy. Students will experience a wide range of genres, both analysing published texts, and constructing original texts. A greater emphasis will be given to the explicit teaching of grammar and the use of specific writing techniques so that students understand the effects of writers' choices on a specific audience.
