Term 1 Issue 1 2024

Principal's Page

Dear families,

We have had a very positive smooth start to the year and it is very apparent in classrooms and the yard that students are embracing school responsibilities and expectations for respectful interactions with others.

I would like to introduce my dynamic executive team who collaborate to drive growth and improvement for all students. At Murray Bridge High we take a team approach to leading transformation, and fulfillment of our purpose which is  ‘to provide a world class education that builds a strong future for the young people of the Murraylands’.

When a site is as large as ours it is impossible as a Principal to know everyone’s individual stories, that is why we have Neighbourhood (Middle School) or Student Pathways Leaders (Senior School). These leaders have oversight of a smaller group of students and get to know students' strengths and needs really well. If you have a concern about your child in a particular subject, the subject teacher is definitely the best person to talk to in the first instance. For all other concerns, the Neighbourhood or Pathways Leader is your go to, and they can redirect you to the most appropriate leader or support person to address your query or concern. All staff have teaching commitments so it can be difficult to respond to a request immediately. If you email they will take action as soon as possible. The photos and names of all the leaders are displayed on the next page. Of course in the event of an emergency or urgent time bound issue it is best to call the school and support staff in the front office or student support services will ensure your message is delivered to the right person.

I am very excited to have welcomed new staff and to find that there is this universal agreement and happiness for the way students have embraced and supported them. For many families some if not most of this year’s teachers may be different to previous years, so we encourage all to come along to our Meet the Teacher Evening on Tuesday Feb 20th at 3.45 - 5.30 in the quadrangle. We will have a sausage sizzle on the go, and it is a casual family affair. At 5.30 Deputy Principal Paula Hahesy will run a brief session on Google Suite for interested parents and caregivers.

Many thanks to our very understanding neighbours, who have persevered through evacuation and invacuation trials this week. The warning system needs to reach the full school area to ensure safety for all.  It is reassuring to know that our systems and processes work effectively and that in the event of a critical emergency everyone knows exactly what to do and missing people are accounted for.

On Tuesday February 27th we will hold the Governing Council AGM at 6pm in the Library. I encourage all to come along and meet current Governing Council members, and potentially put your hand up to take on this very important but non-onerous role in the governance of our school. We meet twice a term on a Tuesday evening for approximately 90 mins, where updates; plans and improvement discussions feature strongly. I would love for you to join us!

Regards,

SAASTA

By Nick Pearce

On Wednesday Week 1, we had the pleasure to host our very first SAASTA Day at MBHS for our Year 10-12 program for 2024. SAASTA stands for the South Australian Aboriginal Secondary Training Academy. It sits within the Department for Education and it's an education program for Aboriginal learners from years seven to twelve.

SAASTA is a curriculum program that creates opportunities for Aboriginal students to participate in a culturally responsive and safe curriculum that's connected to developing themselves as Aboriginal people and creating the next generation of leaders.

The senior SAASTA program has had a restructure this year at MBHS, where we now host Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students from surrounding schools to join the Murray Bridge SAASTA Academy, and runs all day every Wednesday for Years 10-12.

We are lucky to have students from Mannum Area School join us in our senior school academy this year, with the students already settling well within our academy. Overall the first session was a tremendous success in what looks to be an exciting year ahead for the program.

ELO Aquatics Day

By Christine McGowen

The ELO students kick started 2024 with an excursion to the Murraylands Aquatic Centre. It was a great day out with perfect weather and gave everyone the chance to build positive relationships and share experiences. At the aquatics, students had the opportunity to engage in various water activities such knee-boarding and kayaking. The students enjoyed a shared lunch of Dominos Pizza!
We look forward to a great year ahead in the ELO classes!
