Principal's Page

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Thank you for your understanding after our water emergency on Wednesday. We try to schedule any major works in school holidays to avoid disruption, but unfortunately were not able to find a solution for this last minute emergency repair. Luckily no buildings have been damaged so it was business as usual on Thursday. I appreciate the consideration given by the plumbers to help us manage the situation with as limited disruption as possible.

Over the last couple of weeks the MBHS family has grown. Congratulations to Danika Mortimer and her partner Demi on the birth of Zayden, and also to Jibba Wingard and partner Kymberley on the birth of Amali. I am thrilled to hear all is going well. I would like to welcome Gunay Aghayeva who is teaching middle years English and HASS this year. Ganay and her family have moved to Murray Bridge so we welcome them to our community as well!

The Year 12 Formal was a spectacular event this year. I was so proud of our young people navigating the red carpet amongst a sea of flashing cameras from well wishers. The procession of vintage and unusual vehicles dropping students off continues to be a draw card for spectators on Bridge Street and so unique to Murray Bridge.  I would like to acknowledge the formal team of Jazmin Carr, Adriana Karras, Bronte Folly, Holly Lynch and Payton Barr, who did a fabulous job of organising the event, and decorating the Town Hall with a magical stary night theme. The Year 11 Home Ec students and staff once again put on a delicious supper. Many thanks to year 12 Student Pathway Leader Aaron Pratt for his patience and perseverance in steering all in the right direction for a fabulous night.

This last week saw the year 7 Aquatics days take place and a range of camps and excursions to end the term. These extra experiences are always so well received by students and are the things that are fondly remembered in years to come. Parents will receive student reports by email early next week, with information for booking online into parent/teacher conversations soon after. We have several options:
First week of term 2- Thursday 2nd May 3.45 -6.00pm
Week 2 Monday 6th May 3.45 - 7pm and Tuesday 7th May at 3.45 - 5.30 pm
I encourage all to book in as early as possible to secure times with the range of teachers on the same night.

Regards,

ILC Workabout Centre Barista and First Aid Training

By Jo Heward

The ILC hosted Barista and First Aid training for Aboriginal students who were interested in gaining these qualifications. It was great to see coffee making skills develop over the training and community members were impressed with the confidence of the participants, their customer service  and  coffee making skills. The Workabout Centre offers a number of training programs throughout the year and provides a great opportunity for students looking to develop their skills and gain qualifications. Well done

ILC Legal Studies Excursion

By Doug Gray - Legal Studies teacher

After nearly a term of discussing the law, learning how the court system works and participating in mock trials it was time to see the real thing as we ventured to Adelaide to observe our legal system in action.

On arrival at the Magistrates Court there were several news reporters outside, which suggested to us that something newsworthy was about to happen inside. Unfortunately for us we didn’t get to see it. Instead we observed several people appearing before a Magistrate on relatively minor charges, ranging from using a mobile phone while driving to failing to give way. One accused pleaded guilty and was fined, while all the other cases were adjourned. We also had the opportunity to see a person appear via video link on a charge of breaching his home detention bail. He received very little sympathy from the Magistrate and had his bail cancelled.

Leaving the Magistrates Court we were met by Jared Daly’s brother Mitch, who is a Police Prosecutor. He spoke to us about his role and how he got into his current position, while telling us that all the excitement happens in the District Court across the road.

So off to the District Court building we headed, only to find that most of the courtrooms were empty. We did get to see a Judge deliver a “Not Guilty” verdict, much to the delight of the accused and his family and friends who were also in the courtroom. We also observed a Judge spend several minutes lecturing an accused woman who was on bail awaiting trial, that there were several conditions she needed to observe if she wished to remain on bail.

While we didn’t observe any cases that could be described as “exciting”, we did get to see the law in action  and take in the atmosphere of the different courts, from the less formal nature of the Magistrates Court to the stricter protocols of the District Court.

I’d like to thank “Judge” Jaz Crawford for accompanying us, as well as our bus driver Frank, who got a last minute call up on the morning of the excursion. It almost goes without saying that the students were excellent ambassadors for the ILC.

Robotics News - EXCITING ADVENTURES in NARACOORTE

By Matilda Millan (8PN)

The robotics club recently embarked on a journey to Naracoorte, and boy, it was an adventure! From exploring ancient caves to showcasing our robot skills, every moment was packed with fun and learning.

On Friday the 22nd, the robotics club packed our gear and departed on our journey to Naracoorte! We arrived at Black Cockatoo Bush camp after sunset. Despite the darkness, we rallied together and set up our tents like seasoned explorers. Who knew setting up camp could be so thrilling?

The next morning we headed off to uncover the mysteries of the Naracoorte Caves. Guided by Andrew, a knowledgeable guide, we toured through the Alexandra Cave and then walked through the Wonambi Fossil Centre, marvelling at its ancient formations and learning about the megafauna that once roamed around Australia. We took a break at the playground before exploring the Roof Top Loop Walk.  After that adventure, we went to Naracoorte High School to help set up for the Scrimmage the next day.

On Sunday we had to get up bright and early to pack up our tent, the trailer and the bus and leave to go to the Scrimmage. At the scrimmage, the Mulyawonks team did extremely well and were the Captain of the Winning Alliance. Beaming with pride we packed up everything and made our way back to Murray Bridge, eager to share our tales of adventure with all of you.

"It was fun, chaotic, busy and above all, a very memorable trip. Best excursion I've been on for a while, that's for sure." - Keira Stavast

"Another remarkable trip for our robotics club, with outstanding robot performance and team spirit. Core memories made for all." - Lucas Bubner

"We had some delicious wood-oven-baked pizza, explored deep inside the Naracoorte caves, and our Mulyawonks team (22407) was part of the winning alliance at the scrimmage." - Andrew Bermingham

Year 9 STEM

By Avelin David

Our Year 9 WI students have been delving into the properties of light in their recent studies. To deepen their understanding, we conducted a practical session focusing on 'The Law Of Reflection.' Equipped with a light box and A3-sized paper, students explored reflections, ensuring that the angle of incidence equaled the angle of reflection using a protractor.
Each student worked independently on this task, showcasing exceptional dedication and completing analysis questions related to the practical. Congratulations to the Year 9 WI students on their outstanding work!

Year 7 STEM - Creating Rainbows and Mastering Skills

Class 7NR recently ventured into the school labs for an experiment aimed at developing our scientific lab skills. Our mission? Creating a rainbow while mastering the art of following instructions, collaborative work, and precision measurement.

Working together, we measured out precise portions of colours. The result? A rainbow showcasing our skills and teamwork. The practical also taught us about working safely in the lab.

Here's to many more scientific experiences!

ELO Easter Celebrations

By Nicolene Timmo

On Thursday 28th March, the three ELO classes went to Sturt Reserve to start the Easter celebrations. Students worked together to engage in various team building activities and enjoyed the sunny weather. Sean and Travis skillfully worked the BBQ and ensured all were able to feast on a delicious sausage sizzle lunch. Overall, this was a great day out in our local community!

SACE Art Show Excursion

By Catherine Alcock

On 21st March Year 11 and 12 Visual Art students went into Adelaide to view the SACE Art Show.  The artworks included selected paintings, drawings, sculptures, costumes, and multimedia works from students who completed SACE Art Visual and Design in 2023. Students were able to read the folios accompanying final practicals and gain inspiration for their own upcoming work.
From there we visited the SAMSTAG Museum of Art for a guided tour and activity. Bruce Nuske a South Australian ceramicist was exhibiting his amazing, intricate and technically spectacular vessels. Furniture and exhibition designer Khai Liew created the display area, each perfectly complementing the other and enhancing the gallery experience. Dana Awartani was also exhibiting with works reconsidering Arab visual culture and the beauty in creation.
Our final visit was to the Art Gallery of South Australia, where students had time to view works of their choosing in support of their visual studies and folios. Some comments from the students: 'Seeing artworks at AGSA made me more interested in artworks that move', 'I liked seeing the different stages of progress in the making of the paintings, which showed a lot about the artist's thoughts and feelings during the process. It made me feel connected to and appreciative of the artworks', 'viewing artwork by other young people at the SACE Art Show was incredibly inspiring'.

The Lerwin Nursing Home Project

By Kylie Brunato and Matt Perriman

Murray Bridge High School is excited to have been invited to participate in The Lerwin Nursing Home Mural Project. This project was generously offered to us by the Lions Club and Rotary Club of Murray Bridge. Throughout the first term of this year, Year 10 Visual Art and Design students worked hard on creating farm-themed artworks for a mural that will be displayed at the Lerwin Nursing Home. The students artworks focused on the Murraylands farm theme and there were an array of wonderful pieces created.

Recently, representatives from the Lions Club of Murray Bridge and Rotary Club of Murray Bridge visited Murray Bridge High School to view the works of art. They were amazed by the amount of beautiful work the students had produced, and it took them over one and a half hours to choose the pieces that will be drawn up on five wooden panels.

The students have painted the undercoat and have already started sketching up, getting ready to paint. We cannot wait to see the final result next term!
