Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Thank you to the large number of parents who booked in for Parent /Teacher conversations over the last two weeks. I value the opportunities to share and strengthen knowledge that helps to deepen understanding because we know this can result in improved outcomes. We plan for these evenings  to be away from similar primary school events. I am keen for any feedback on the format and any changes we can make to improve the experience for families. Please email me on dl.0785.info@schools.sa.edu.au with your suggestions.

Due to rising costs, availability of relief teachers and disruption to learning, I have needed to cut back on the number of extracurricular knockout sporting events. I know students love the opportunity to be involved and therefore I haven't cut them out completely, just rationalised the number, and ensured that all students who want to have the opportunity to be involved, can be. We have thriving school clubs in pedal prix and volleyball who meet regularly to train, ( and I am more than open to supporting people who wish to set up and run others) and a comprehensive PE program across all year levels that exposes students to a diverse range of sporting opportunities. Please see the year's extracurricular sport program and KPIs later in this newsletter.

At the end of last term we had the opportunity to be involved in the Rural City of Murray Bridge ‘Wall-to-Wall’ art installations. The three day weekend event saw artists paint amazing murals in five locations around Murray Bridge, one being the Independent Learning Centre on Seventh Street.  It was great to be able to meet the artist Stephanie Cartledge and contribute to the painting of the mural. There are more photos to follow of staff and students from the ILC contributing their artistic flair also.  Make sure you drive past the ILC and see the final product, along with the others at the Regional Gallery, Murraylands skills Centre,Edwards Square soundshell and the Salvation Army Thrift Shop.

Have you booked your tickets to our Musical ‘The School of Rock’ which launches early in June? Staff and students have put in hundreds of hours to ensure a quality and fun experience for all. Tickets can be purchased online through our school website.

I have included a poster later in this newsletter for Dry July, in support of the Flinders Foundation. Many of you will recognise Kylie who as the receptionist greets you in the front office and answers your phone calls. I encourage everyone to get behind this worthwhile cause.

Regards,

Wall to Wall - Street Art Festival

By Jo Heward

The ILC was lucky enough to be chosen as a site to host a mural as part of the Wall to Wall Street Art Festival, from 12-14th April. The Festival was presented by The Rural City of Murray Bridge, Murray Bridge Regional Gallery, Australian Government RISE fund and Juddy Roller. The mural was one of 5 completed in Murray Bridge during this time and adds to another existing 5 already in the town.

NSW based artist Stephanie Cartledge designed The Paint-by-Numbers mural titled "Current Connections", which celebrates local flora and fauna, highlighting underwater river life.  It was great to watch Stephanie go through the whole process of adding her design to the wall and then seeing it come to life through painting.  ILC students and staff had the opportunity to contribute to the painting of the mural as did many community members.

Success for Bunyips and Murray Bridge Robotics

By Andrew Bermingham

This past Sunday MBHS hosted a scrimmage for FTC Robotics. In addition to our four teams, we also welcomed teams from community robotics groups, the RoboRoos from Tonsley and the Pop Ups from North-Eastern Adelaide.

One of our teams (the Bunyips) was part of the winning alliance and achieved several high scores, thanks to the incredible autonomous coding and driving skills. However, all of our robotics students deserve a shout out for their efforts leading up to and on the day.

Quite a few members of the local community came out to support our school, and help raise money via the sausage sizzle, which was run by some amazing volunteers. We hope to keep hosting scrimmages here at least once per year so, if you missed this one, there will be more opportunities in the future.

Finally, I want to give an extra thanks to the students who gave up their Saturday afternoon to make sure that everything was ready on time.

Funabashi High School Students - Host Families Wanted

By Helen Peake

At the start of term 3 (last week in July and week one of August) the school is again expecting to host a group of students from Funabashi High School in Japan. At this stage we are unsure of how many students will be coming but, at this stage, we are looking for people to express an interest in hosting one of these students.

The students have varying ability in speaking English but that is the prime focus of their coming to stay in our homes for 2 weeks and to study here at Murray Bridge High School. Our host families generally see a vast improvement both in the students' speaking ability as well as their confidence in those two weeks. The students do not have to have their own room - they are able to share.

We receive profiles about the students enabling host families to choose a student who they think will fit in with their family. The school provides the students with a number of excursions while they are here (to which host buddies are often invited). There is no expectation for special meals to be cooked or special treats - the Japanese students are just treated like one of the family.

There is some money paid to host families in order to assist with covering costs while the student is in the home.

If you are at all interested in becoming a host family please do not hesitate to contact me at the school. Should you require any further information again please contact me via email and I will be happy to answer any questions you may have. helen.peake92@schools.sa.edu.au.

Please note this is an expression of interest only. We understand that circumstances change and families may not be able to host even though they have expressed an interest. At times we also have the situation where we cannot place a student in a home but we will work through that once we know how many students are coming.
