Dear families,

NAIDOC Week (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) occurs annually in July, and celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians all over the country. This year’s theme is ‘for our Elders’ Our celebrations included the Bridge Walk and Awards Ceremony on Monday, craft and dreaming stories for students and staff on Wednesday and a special morning tea for Elders and invited guests on Thursday. We were delighted to hear from Shirley Hartman, Dr Vicki Crowley and Peter Crowley and the advocacy and support of Eileen McHughes and Ursula Crowley in the Ngarrindjeri community. The families, in partnership with Ngopun Together have generously donated a scholarship for a worthy year 12 Ngarrindjeri student each year. We thank them for this ongoing commitment and know how much it has been appreciated by previous recipients. We have included photos later in this newsletter.

On the 22nd of June I was fortunate to be invited to the first official Murray Bridge Clontarf event, a celebration and Awards dinner at the Bridgeport function centre with over 100 Aboriginal young men from across the state. They had just competed in two days of basketball at our Murray Bridge Stadium. What impressed me the most was the role that our young men played in the evening, with Jordan Groves who made an excellent MC, and Kedan Holland braving a barrage of questions in the ‘on the couch’ segment between awards. I would like to thank Clontarf staff Ben Fennell and Greg Carter for their organisation and enthusiasm in setting up this program over the last six months and creating the conditions for our mob to shine!

Continuing on the good news stories, and after a hiatus over the covid years, we have been able to enter a team into the iAwards again this year. It did not surprise me that Lucas Bubner and Lachlan Paul were winners in the South Australian education category after seeing first-hand the initiative and entrepreneurial thinking that went into the creation of the app Bunyip Bellowers. They will go on to represent SA at the Nationals later this year, and we wish them the best of luck!

Today we farewell Jason Hagger who heads into the Department to work as a Business Engagement Officer. Jason has been instrumental in creating bespoke digital design solutions to enable teachers to have better access to data about their individual students in a timely manner. He has also worked hand in hand with Paula Hahesy to design a timetable that allows for individualised timetable configurations so that our students get the maximum number of first preference subject choices across the whole school. This is highly complex work and I know most schools do not have this kind of skill set available to them, we have been extremely fortunate. We wish Jason well and know that he is leaving us in a good place, and the influence and expertise he has will benefit many schools in the future.

I wish you all a relaxing and enjoyable two weeks with your young people as our staff recharge their batteries in readiness for term 3.

Regards,

MBHS Student Robotics Club receives $20K Grant

Robotics and coding skills are in high demand across Australia, but there is a shortage of skilled employees in these fields, posing a challenge for industries. Now is the perfect time to emphasise the importance of developing skills necessary for success in a technology-driven workforce, regardless of where a student lives.

We are thrilled to announce that the grant proposal submitted by the robotics club has just been approved, securing a generous funding of $20,000 from benevolence funding through Freemasons Masonic Services.

This substantial grant will allow us to take significant steps towards enhancing robotics, coding, and tech-related skills among students in and around the Murray Bridge community.

We extend our gratitude to the Freemason Masonic Services for their benevolence funding and their belief in our vision.  This grant will kick start an exciting journey towards our long-term goal of establishing a Murraylands Robotics Hub to serve as a resource-sharing platform for multiple regional schools and offering enjoyable robotics competitions accessible to our young people and their communities.

Roboleague Scrimmage @ MBHS

By Keira Stavast

On the weekend of 25th June, the MBHS Student Robotics Club hosted a roboleague scrimmage in Murray Bridge that was open to the community. The Student Robotics Club of South Australia and their volunteers helped us to run an awesome event. This opportunity gave us the chance to help organise an event, and we learned it was a lot harder than it sounds!

It was a surprise to discover that we had a fourth Murray Bridge team formed by the Year 9 robotics class as part of their assessment. These students put together their own team, built and coded a robot, in a very limited timeframe, which is an amazing achievement. We hope some of them might join our club in the near future.

The scrimmage went really well with 10 teams competing in the scrimmage, four of which were our Murray Bridge teams.  Our MBHS teams worked seamlessly with one another, making sure that everyone was included in some way, whether as part of the drive team, or even cheering!

Our BBQ and snacks fundraiser stall was also a success, raising over $300 in funds which we will use to replace broken robot parts. We had such fun!  Big thanks to all the staff (and parent) volunteers who helped out - we couldn’t have done it without you!

Murray Bridge All Culture Fest 2023

The Murray Bridge High School Concert Band 1 performed at the All Culture Fest organised by Council and the Murraylands Migrant Resource Centre which aims to celebrate cultural diversity of Murray Bridge and Refugee Week.

The students performed on the stage at the Murray Bridge Town Hall and represented the school in recognising the cultural diversity of our community through music performance. The event featured a dynamic program of performers, singers, and multicultural dancers and culminated in a citizenship ceremony welcoming new Australians.
All Culture Fest is a free annual event that celebrates the diverse cultures that make up our vibrant community while acknowledging the contributions made by all those who have come to Murray Bridge from far and wide.
It has grown popular over the years, bringing hundreds of people together from all ages and walks of life to celebrate the global cultural diversity that is now embedded into our community. Well done to the students and teachers that supported this important community event.

Tumbi Wulan Art Garden Project

During this term, the Year 9 students dedicated their time and effort to produce stunning outside garden artwork for the Tumbi Wulan area. It was a group project that required students to work together in designing and implementing their ideas on wooden canvases. To meet their deadline, the students went the extra mile and put in additional hours to complete these remarkable artworks. We are excited to witness the unveiling of their impressive creations in term 3.
