Term 3 Issue 3 2023

Principal's Page

Dear families,

Thank you for your understanding over the last couple of days, I know the disruption is a challenge for some families to accommodate.  Today teaching staff are in training, with moderation of work samples being the first activity of the day across all learning areas. This is important to ensure consistency and accuracy of judgements against the Australian Curriculum standards, and it does require all teachers to be involved in the process.  We will then go deeper to evaluate how learning activities and tasks are being differentiated to meet the needs of individual learners for improved outcomes for all. School will be back to normal tomorrow.

Health Awareness Week had a range of year 12 health projects on the go last week. The aim is to bring an awareness of a health issue to the public. There are many, and last Thursday for example a group of  students ran a Men’s health event, clearly articulating the dangers of not looking after health and wellbeing, alongside a senior boys vs male staff basketball match. It was a hotly contested competition with the staff coming out winners in the end, and luckily no injuries!  In the near future you will see a blue tree appear on the fence boundary, a stark reminder to check in on family and friends. We will expand on this and others in the coming newsletter. One enterprising group has set up a link on our facebook page to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research. I challenged them that if they could raise at least $2,000 I would participate in the head shaving, and I am very surprised to see this milestone has been reached with nearly two weeks still to go! Please continue to donate to this worthwhile cause (while I plan what beanies and hats I will wear for the rest of this term).

Last Wednesday evening two students Lucas and Lachlan presented to the National judges of the iAwards in the Student and Education category, for their app ‘Bunyip Bellower’. It was a tense day waiting for the outcome and I am so proud of their achievements in gaining a National Merit. This means they may be invited to take part in the next round - the Asia Pacific regional judging. This is the furthest any of our students have got in this competition, an admirable achievement! Unable to attend was teacher David Heath, on home duties after the very recent arrival of his daughter Wren.

Thank you to the many parents and caregivers who gave their young people a prod in making decisions about subject selections for 2024. We now have all attending students in year 7-9 accounted for, 74% of year 10s and 88% of year 11s. This puts us in great stead to be able to make good decisions around the timetable and staffing for next year. Unfortunately it also means that those who haven’t made selections will have narrower choices as classes fill.

Regards,

Show Time

By Ally Braun

It's a busy time of year at the farm as students have been preparing the livestock for the Royal Adelaide Show. Students from year 8 through to year 12 have the opportunity to participate in practicals at the farm preparing the animals.
Practical lessons have been spent halter training, washing and getting the heifers, boer goat wethers and merino wethers and their handlers ready for the show ring.  This year has been especially rewarding to see Senior ag students mentor younger aggies and pass on the knowledge they have learnt over the years preparing animals for the show.
Students will participate in events at this year's  Royal Adelaide Show from Saturday 2nd September until Thursday 7th September.

Babies at the Farm

By Ally Braun

Agriculture students have had multiple opportunities to carry out lamb and kid marking with lots of farm babies this term. Students have been ear tagging, castrating, tailing and vaccinating. They have practiced their skills with the Merino and Suffolk lambs and Boer goat kids.
Students spend a lot of time with babies cuddling and playing with them. Goats will eventually be sold and processed for meat and the lambs sold at the livestock market.

Royal Adelaide Show Prep - Sheep Team Report

By Kayla Starkey

Over the past two terms, Agriculture students at Roper Road Farm have been busily preparing for the upcoming Royal Adelaide Show. In the sheep team, we have prepared 5 Merino wethers by monitoring nutrition, trimming fleece and hooves, as well as monitoring animal health and welfare. In the last couple of weeks, students have been learning about sheep selection and selecting animals for group classes. Out of the 5 wethers, 3 have been selected, by our Year 9 Agriculture students, to represent the school in the Pen of 3 Wether Competition, to be held on Wednesday 6th September at the Royal Adelaide Show.  We would like to take the time to thank Steven & Brett Koehler of Radnor Merino Stud for the supply of our show wethers. Your help and support of students in the merino wether competition is greatly appreciated.

Students have also prepared wool for this year's show as well. We have entered 4 fleeces into the wool section, two in the Schools Wool Competition, which we are eligible for as we had two teams of wethers at last year's show, and two fleeces in the RAHS Country Shows competition, one wether and one ewe fleece. To be eligible for this competition we had to have exhibited and won champion fleece at a country show in the Spring 2022 & Autumn 2023 country show circuit. The wool section is judged prior to the show so results will be published soon.

Watch on social media and in the next newsletter for a Royal Adelaide Show results wrap-up and photos from the competition. I know the students are extremely excited for the upcoming show. Results will also be published online on the Royal Adelaide Show's website.

We wish our team the best of luck in the lead up to one of the biggest events on our Agriculture calendar. Also, good luck and best wishes to our Dairy Cattle and Led Wether Goat team all competing at this year's Royal Adelaide Show. Go MBHS!

Commissioner of Young People Connects with our Middle School Leaders

By Chris Braun

On Tuesday 29th August, our Middle School Leaders met with the Commissioner of Young People who are embarking on a series of consultations with young people around wellbeing to better understand what wellbeing means to them and how schools can best support young people’s physical, mental, and emotional health. Our leaders were asked to design the best school ever. This included brainstorming ideas for actions that could be used to create more welcoming & inclusive schools, healthier schools, more interesting lessons, and more opportunities to have a say. The Commissioner said the students "were a fantastic group and had many valuable insights on wellbeing & how schools (as a whole) can better support students. Thank you! We were impressed by their contributions".
